Argumentation

This course examines the psychological and logical basis of argument and principles of effective organization. It teaches the development and application of critical thinking skills as well as the practice of creating and evaluating arguments so students can become more skilled and responsible advocates. Instructor notes: What to expect in this course: • You will participate in weekly writing to analyze specific argumentation concepts, theories, and their application • You will post videos of yourself delivering arguments in a variety of contexts • You will watch and understand a variety of video lectures (for examples, go to http://youtube.com/miracostarobertson) • You will read and reflect on our text through writing, verbal postings, and videos • You will participate in fun and creative argumentation activities The primary goals of this course are: • Objectively identify and critique various types of arguments. • Identify, analyze and define issues of importance. • Understand and apply tests of evidence to arguments. • Competently defend and/or refute a given claim. • Research, construct, and present a sound argument. OUTCOMES: By the end of the semester each student will be able to: • Effectively deliver an extemporaneous speech with a clear argument. • Write an advocacy paper. • Evaluate the quality of an argument based on an accepted standard set of criteria.
