Preparatory Chemistry

This introductory chemistry course focuses on developing problem-solving skills needed for success in CHEM 110. It emphasizes the application of the scientific method, modern ideas concerning atomic structure and chemical bonding, the periodic table and its relationship to chemical properties, principles of stoichiometry including chemical ratio calculations, chemical nomenclature, properties of the states of matter, and chemical reaction principles. The laboratory component of this course provides direct participation in experiments, demonstrations, learning activities and discussions related to fundamental concepts in chemistry. UC CREDIT LIMITATION: Credit for CHEM 100/CHEM 100H or CHEM 108; No credit if taken after CHEM 110/CHEM 110H.

Instructor notes: This course is taught in Blackboard. A MANDATORY LIVE ONLINE session must be attended and an online syllabus quiz must be completed within the first week of class to remain enrolled. The section of CHEM 108 requires students attend online sessions using Blackboard Collaborate and includes proctored exams that must be taken onsite at MiraCosta (or by arrangement at another proctoring center). The exams are taken at the Academic Proctoring Center, which has locations on both the Oceanside and San Elijo MiraCosta campuses, with hours in the morning, afternoon, and evening M - F. It is the student's responsibility to make the necessary arrangements. The book you will need is Introductory Chemistry, 4th edition by Tro, available at the bookstore on campus. You will also need the Mastering Chemistry access code to accompany the text, available with the book bundle (available only at the bookstore) or sold separately online at Be aware that buying the text using any other online site does not guarantee that mastering chemistry is included.
