Introduction to Music Theory

This basic music theory course teaches students to read and write musical notation, and it develops listening skills with regard to rhythm and harmony. Students are required to attend and analyze elements of live musical performances.

Instructor notes: This course is a fully online course, which is taught online through a non-MiraCosta Moodle server specific to the Music Department. However, we are piloting a new program where you can log into your Blackboard account, and then access the Moodle course directly from there. You can also access the course by visiting www.mattfalker.com and clicking on "Music Class Online Login". Get your textbook as soon as possible! The textbooks come with a serial number that unlocks the online quizzes. If you don't plan on purchasing a textbook, you should consider dropping the course. The textbook will cost just less than $80. There is also a requirement for you to attend two concerts during the semester. You may choose your own concerts. More details about concert report requirements will be given in the syllabus, which will be available at http://www.mattfalker.com/MiraCosta/Syllabi.html Please note that this is a LATE START course. The course will open during the second week of classes, with the official start date of January 27.
