MiraCosta College Announces 2012 Commencement

MiraCosta College will hold its 2012 commencement on Friday, May 25 at 5 p.m. in front of the Administration Building at the Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Dr., Oceanside. Of the more than 1,000 students eligible to graduate, approximately 350 are expected to participate in the ceremony. This year’s commencement speaker is MiraCosta College graduating student and Associated Student President Sasha Tangherian.

Sasha Tangherian moved to the United States from London, England at the age of 14. As a teenager, he was eager to explore the new culture. The transition from England to the United States was easy and he soon felt like he was home. Although Tangherian thrived in his new environment, he lost track of his academic goals and dropped out of high school. After making the decision to return to school, he bounced around from college to college until he found the right fit at MiraCosta College. "The friendliness of the population and the quality of instruction were the first things which got my attention," says Tangherian. Here he became a student ambassador and became involved in student government, and this year served as ASG president. He also has been named one of the 2012 recipients of MiraCosta College's highest academic award, the Medal of Honor.

"Thanks to MiraCosta College, my life has done a complete 360 degree turn; I am a 4.0 student and clearly see the path I am going," says Sasha.

Dr. Richard J. Robertson, vice president of Student Services at the college, will be the master of ceremonies at this year’s commencement, and the ceremony will begin with a performance by the MiraCosta Oceanside Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Stephen Torok.
