MiraCosta College President's Contract Renewed by Board of Trustees

Dr. Francisco Rodriguez

At its May 28 meeting, the MiraCosta College's Board of Trustees voted to extend the contract of college Superintendent/President Dr. Francisco Rodriguez for four years through 2017. The new contract will take effect July 1, 2013.

"MiraCosta College is an exceptional institution with an unfaltering commitment to educate students and serve the community,” Dr. Rodriguez said Tuesday. “It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve as president and I appreciate the confidence of the board to lead this institution into the future.”

Since his tenure began in 2009, Dr. Rodriguez has guided the college through substantial growth, even during times of reduced financial resources. The college’s credit enrollment has increased nearly 25 percent, while the number of veteran and active duty military students served has increased by more than 50 percent. The college has met student demand by increasing the number of online and hybrid classes, offering more university-transferable classes and scheduling courses in ways that work better with students’ schedules.

President Rodriguez’s commitment to students has resulted in the college foundation raising more money for student scholarships than ever before. In 2011-2012 alone, donors gave more than $1.3 million to fund scholarships and excellence in college programs. The college has also developed an active grants program that in 2011-2012 resulted in more than $10 million in grant commitments secured. Dr. Rodriguez’s leadership also helped guide the district through the country’s most severe financial crisis since the Great Depression, resulting in a fiscal year 2013 operationally balanced budget and an A+ rating by independent financial auditors.

Dr. Rodriguez is the recipient of multiple awards and honors for his leadership, scholarship, service and contributions to higher education, including the 2012 Small Business Development Center Advocate of the Year Award and the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations Communicator of the Year. Also in 2012 he was appointed to a three-year term on the National Science Foundation Education’s Human Resources Advisory Committee. Dr. Rodriguez serves on the board of directors for the Oceanside and Carlsbad Chambers of Commerce and is an Oceanside Rotarian.

“Dr. Rodriguez’s commitment to students and this institution has positioned MiraCosta College to become one of the best community colleges in the nation,” said Board of Trustees President Dr. David Broad. “His firm belief in higher education, dedication to open access, and his ability to manage the resources of the college has earned him the respect and support of the Board of Trustees; the faculty, staff and students at the college; and the community as a whole. The board is thrilled that he will continue to serve as this institution’s leader for years to come.”

Dr. Rodriguez’s contract includes an annual salary of $256,208, the same salary as when he was hired in 2008.

Dr. Rodriguez began his career at the University of California, Davis, and his community college career in 1997 at Woodland Community College in the Yuba Community College District, where he served as associate dean of instruction and student services, and executive dean (now titled president). In 2003, he was appointed president of Cosumnes River College in Sacramento and served in that capacity for six years.

Born and raised in San Francisco, President Rodriguez is an English-language learner and a first-generation college graduate. He has a Ph.D. in education from Oregon State University, a master’s degree in community development and a bachelor’s degree in Chicano studies, both from UC Davis.
