MiraCosta College Horticulture Student to Volunteer at Arlington Cemetery

Eric Bear

MiraCosta College student Eric Bear has been selected to participate in a landscaping project at Arlington National Cemetery. Bear will join selected students and landscape professionals from the Professional LandCare Network (PLANET) for their annual Renewal and Remembrance event this July.

Each year, this event draws hundreds of landscape and lawn care professionals from across the country to spend the day mulching, cabling and installing lightening protection for trees, pruning, planting, and liming and aerating more than 200 acres of the cemetery. Bear, who was nominated by his instructor to participate in the project, will be part of a group assigned to work on the cemetery’s irrigation system.

A Marine veteran who served eight years of active duty, Bear started MiraCosta College’s Landscape Management Program last fall. He attends classes part-time while holding down a full-time job.

Bear has proven to be an excellent and dedicated student, according to the department’s lead instructor Claire Ehrlinger.

“This is a wonderful networking opportunity for Eric,” she said. “I am so very proud of him and know he will be an excellent representative of MiraCosta College.”
