The Diversity and Equity Committee (DEqC) utilizes the ombudsperson model, providing a systematic process for faculty to clarify situations concerning diversity and equity. DEqC acts as an advisory committee to the Academic Senate President and/or Council, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement in matters of fairness, respect, diversity, and equity.
DEqC fulfills its mission by three distinct services for full-time faculty members:
Replace emotional reactions with a critical thinking process
Shine light on root cause
Identify appropriate course of action
Re-frame the issue
Utilize governance model
Refer to grievance process, mediation, etc.
Serves as a resource to PG&E on matters of faculty evaluation related to cultural competency.
Reports to the Academic Senate President and/or Academic Senate Council on issues pertaining to diversity and equity and areas of Senate primacy.
DEqC’s membership comprises 7-9 Full-time faculty members serving two-year terms. Terms are renewable. Terms should be staggered so that no more than 60% of the committee turns over in a given year. From among its members, DEqC elects a chair to serve a two-year term. DEqC’s membership includes:
At least 7 full-time faculty, at least 4 of whom should have counseling, organizational, or mediation experience. It is desirable but not required to include faculty from multiple disciplines: Counseling, Communication, Letters, Business, etc…
For 2015-16, DEqC generally meets the 4th Fridays of each month, 12:00-2:00 pm, in OC 1252/1257. See the meeting schedule & web page for details. Agendas for upcoming meetings are disseminated via email at least 72 hours in advance of the meeting.
