Judy Zander
ACCT 201 Class

In addition to teaching at MiraCosta College, Judy Zander is an accounting professor at Grossmont College where she has been teaching for 29 years.  Judy has lived in San Diego her entire life, graduating from Grossmont College with both AA and AS degrees, then from San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration-Accounting, and finally from National University with a Master’s degree in Business Administration.   In addition to community college teaching, Judy is a Digital Faculty Consultant for McGraw-Hill Publishing where she trains college instructors in online teaching/learning. 

Judy has taught Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting in both the traditional classroom as well as fully online. Before beginning her teaching career, she worked in accounting for a variety of industries including photographic supply, restaurant supply, and escrow services.

IMPORTANT NOTE on CLOSED Classes: All the online classes and many of the on-campus classes close quickly. You should register ASAP if you are interested in any class. If you change your mind, please drop the class immediately so others can enroll. If the class is closed, consider the Wait List procedures; be aware of the rules and the limitations. Otherwise, consider these options: 1) register for another section if available; 2) register for another class; 3) consider registering in a future semester; 4) show up for the first day of an on-campus class and discuss with the instructor; or 5) forget about it and move on. The instructor will not intervene with the wait list procedure.

Please be aware that, once a class reaches maximum enrollment and “closes,” on or after the first day of the semester, even if “available” spaces appear on SURF due to drops, it is within the instructor's complete discretion on whether to add more students at that time. Drops after the first day are normal attrition and are factored in when setting the maximum enrollment. The class has started and important assignments and subject matter have already been covered. Please do not email the instructor. Thank you for your understanding.

Teaching Philosophy/Style and Class Management/Activities

Teaching Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting has been my career for many years.  I’ve learned that it takes a teaching/learning community for all of us to succeed.   I promote using Blackboard to support our work in the classroom because it provides an effective way for us to keep communicating when we aren’t face-to-face. 

In my classes you will find a variety of methods used for learning the material.  I typically lecture and demonstrate the day’s topic(s) and then give time for you, the student, to practice using it.  This practice is generally done as a partnership or group effort.    I’ve found that watching someone (me) demonstrate the principles of accounting makes it look easy.  It’s often not until you have a chance to give it a try that your questions will arise.  I equate it to learning to play tennis or a musical instrument.  There’s a big difference between observing it and doing it yourself. 

Your success is my primary goal.  You can expect that I will be prepared to help you achieve your goals.  I expect that you are as committed to success as I am by showing up, being prepared, and being willing to apply yourself every day.
