BUS 290 Business Communication Chapters for first two weeks of semester (PDFs):

BCOM-6: CH01 CH02

IMPORTANT NOTE on CLOSED Classes: All the online classes and many of the on-campus classes close quickly. You should register ASAP if you are interested in any class. If you change your mind, please drop the class immediately so others can enroll. If the class is closed, consider the Wait List procedures; be aware of the rules and the limitations. Otherwise, consider these options: 1) register for another section if available; 2) register for another class; 3) consider registering in a future semester; 4) show up for the first day of an on-campus class and discuss with the instructor; or 5) forget about it and move on. The instructor will not intervene with the wait list procedure.

Please be aware that, once a class reaches maximum enrollment and “closes,” on or after the first day of the semester, even if “available” spaces appear on SURF due to drops, it is within the instructor's complete discretion on whether to add more students at that time. Drops after the first day are normal attrition and are factored in when setting the maximum enrollment. The class has started and important assignments and subject matter have already been covered. Please do not email the instructor. Thank you for your understanding.

Teaching Philosophy/Style and Class Management/Activities

We all know that the business world is competitive and getting more competitive every day. I believe that the stronger your communications skills are, the greater your chances are of being successful.

In my BUS 290 class, I want to give you the chance to really engage with the material, have fun, and practice, practice, practice. We will focus on understanding and gaining experience with the various communication tools you will use in a professional environment. We will study writing and speaking to specific audiences for a purpose, and learn about these audiences’ motivations and cultural contexts. We will build your skills for business writing (including memos, letters, reports, and presentations), work in teams, present with PowerPoint, and simulate the steps to get a great job.

No one will coast in this class. Everyone will participate. There will be quizzes, writing assignments, group exercises, and oral presentations. Throughout the term, we will incorporate examples of current, true business cases and reference the latest business trends.

With our packed curriculum and so much to do, I ask that students be respectful, timely, and prepared for every class. Please take a look at the syllabus, and feel free to e-mail or call me with any questions.

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." -- Benjamin Franklin

Testimonial from former BUS 290 student, Linda F:

"I was thinking of you today and am so thankful for the great job you did honing my writing skills in Business Communications last fall. Due to a really excellent letter that I wrote defending my company's position in requesting reimbursement for property taxes (13 years' worth!), we got a check in the mail today for reimbursement for the full amount (about $25K). My boss is thrilled, and credits my letter with our getting the reimbursement, as they fought it for five months. I am a hero thanks to you!"
