Community Services Classes
MiraCosta College Surf Team
The office of Community Services partners with Student Services to provide competitive surfing for MiraCosta College students. Coach Rich Langen works with experienced surfers to train and compete in meets sponsored by the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA). Two MiraCosta teams will compete against schools including UCSD, UCSB, SDSU, UCLA, USC, and Point Loma Nazarene, at meets held throughout Southern California.
To participate on the NSSA team, surfers are required to register for Competitive Surfing, a class offered by MiraCosta College’s Community Services program. Cost of the class is $30. To register, contact Community Services at 760.795.6820.
To qualify for NSSA competition, students must:
- Pay their own annual NSSA membership fee of $70 (The college will pay for League, State and National entry fees)
- Be a high school graduate
- Be registered for a minimum of two academic classes (6 units) at MiraCosta College
- Have a minimum 2.0 GPA (entering freshman may use high school GPA)
The Competitive Surfing class is also open to experienced surfers 18 years of age or older who do not wish to compete, but want to learn about competitive surfing.
The class meets for practice every Wednesday, 3-6 p.m. until the time changes to Pacific Standard Time, and then the time will be 3-5 p.m.
