Informal Logic and Critical Thinking

This course develops critical thinking skills through the study of informal logic. Topics include the structure and evaluation of arguments, fallacies, credibility, rhetorical devices, and explanations. Using examples from the news media, advertising, political speeches, and other real-life sources, students learn the distinction between claims and theories that make sense and claims and theories that do not survive rational scrutiny.

Instructor notes: This is a fully online, 6-week, summer course. Students are expected to start working in Blackboard from the beginning (6/16), and there are deadlines in the first few days of the class which must be met to maintain enrollment. The book for the course is How to Think About Weird Things, 7th edition, by Schick and Vaughn. It's available in the bookstore. I will also accept 5th or 6th edition (4th or earlier would be too early). There are no in-person meetings, but there are frequent deadlines, and the course is not self-paced.
