History of Rock and Roll

This course surveys the history of rock and roll from its origin in American popular music to the present. It relates the stylistic changes that have occurred in rock and roll to the social events that surround them. The course also examines historic and current rock subcultures and the attitudes surrounding them.

Instructor notes: Music 114 requires 2 text books. 1) Rockin' in Time, 7th edition by David Szatmary. 2) The Pop, Rock and Soul Reader, 2nd edition by David Brackett. It is critical that you purchase both texts and purchase the correct editions for these texts since all the major course work and exams are taken from them. You will also be required to attend rock concerts which require purchasing tickets for this course. Additionally, renting, watching and writing critically on documentaries is a requirement of this course.
