Energy, Motion, and Matter: An Introduction to Physics and Chemistry

This course introduces the non-scientist to the fundamental concepts of physics and chemistry. Physics topics include motion, force, work, energy, gravity, electricity, magnetism, light, and subatomic particles and forces. Chemistry topics include chemical and physical properties of elements and compounds, the periodic table, atomic theory and structure, chemical bonding, and nuclear structure and processes. This course also teaches students how to analyze and solve problems using critical thinking and the scientific method. UC CREDIT LIMITATION: No credit if taken after college course in chemistry or physics.

Instructor notes: A MANDATORY online Live Elluminate session must be attended and an online syllabus quiz must be completed by August 30, 2012. Two sessions are scheduled: Saturday August 25, 2012 11:30pm–12:30pm or Wednesday August 29, 2012 6:00pm-7:00pm. The course requires students attend online elluminate sessions and includes three exams that must be taken on the MiraCosta campus (or by arrangement at another proctoring center). The exams are taken at the Academic Proctoring Center, which has locations on both the Oceanside and San Elijo MiraCosta campuses, with hours in the morning, afternoon, and evening M - F.
