Professional Development Program / Flex

MiraCosta's Professional Development / Flex Program offers employees a comprehensive and systematic program of services and activities designed to foster staff, student, and instructional improvement by leveraging the reflective vision of participants.

The Flexible Calendar Program (Flex) is a privilege afforded to community colleges by the state of California. It allows districts with a state-approved program to replace up to 15 instructional days per academic year with professional development activities. Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations stipulates some details of the program and that it must be administered locally by regular meetings of an advisory committee composed of faculty, students, and administrators. At MiraCosta, this advisory committee is known as the Professional Development Program committee, or PDP.

Important Information

  • ALL FACULTY

    • All faculty claiming flex credit for eligible professional development activities must maintain electronic transcripts in MyFlex.
  • FULL-TIME FACULTY

    • The flex obligation for a full 30.0 LHE teaching load during 2012-13 is 60 hours.
      • Your obligation may be more than 60 hours if you carry an overload. Your obligation may be less than 60 hours if you have reassigned time, are on leave, etc. It is the responsibility of each individual faculty member to check with PDP to determine his/her exact number of obligation hours.
      • Please think carefully about things you already do that may count as flex; you probably do more than you realize. These activities must be above and beyond your contractually obligated duties and responsibilities and must meet the state's criteria for staff, student, and/or instructional improvement.
      • Please try to be more diligent about recording these activities in real time rather than waiting until the end of the year. This can help avoid problems with pre-approvals and possibly avoid deficient transcripts.
    • Make sure you have thoroughly read and enrolled in the 2012-13 contract on your transcript. This is not optional. Failure to enroll in it means you have not filed the required contract with the state and negates any professional development hours recorded.
  • ASSOCIATE FACULTY

    • Currently, participation in the Flex program is still optional.
    • The number of flex hours you are eligible to claim and be paid for depends on your number of teaching LHE (see the Collective Bargaining Agreement on the "Documents and Forms" page).
    • Paper timesheets are required, properly filled out and attached to your transcript printout. See the "MyFlex" page, the page for Associate Faculty, and the "Documents and Forms" page for more information.
