Academic Support Services at MiraCosta
MiraCosta provides many ways students can get academic support, in person and online, in a variety of subjects. Use the quick links to the left or learn more about academic support programs below.
On-Campus Academic Support
AIS Computer Labs
AIS Computer Labs are offered at the Oceanside Campus, San Eljio Campus, and Community Learning Center. There are computers and printers available for student use with a variety of software necessary to complete your coursework.
Language Resource Center
The Language Resource Center offers multimedia and computer resources for language learning, as well as conversation coaches, at the Oceanside and San Elijo campuses.
The Library offers services at the Oceanside Campus, San Elijo Campus and the Community Learning Center. Students may drop in anytime for research help; to study with classmates in a group study room or alone in study pods; to use course textbooks; to check out books, DVDs, laptops and mobile hotspots, or to attend a library orientation or workshop.
Math Learning Center
The Math Learning Center (MLC) is designed to help students in any MiraCosta mathematics class with friendly drop-in tutoring, group and prep sessions, as well as appointment services in all mathematics and statistics courses. There are also helpful handouts created by MLC staff to supplement class notes and additional resources available on the website. Students may check-out items to use in the MLC like textbooks, calculators, headphones,and personal whiteboards; there are also 24 computers available for online homework or class projects. The MLC does offer some limited make-up test services. Group study rooms are available for reservation through the library website, and students are encouraged to work on their homework with others in the MLC,asking questions as they come up.
STEM Learning Centers
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Learning Centers provide individualized (one-on-one), drop-in tutoring, and counseling for students in Chemistry, Physics, Math, Biology, Biotechnology, Physical Science and Computer Science courses at both the Oceanside and San Elijo campuses. Students are able to study independently or in group study rooms that can be reserved. Many resources are available including faculty office hours, laptops, textbooks, calculators, anatomical models and slides, and molecular models.
Tutoring & Academic Support
The Tutoring & Academic Support Center (TASC) offers a comprehensive, free peer tutoring program for any student enrolled in non-STEM courses. Tutoring is available by appointment and on a drop-in basis, in both individual and group settings.
Academic Success Coaches are trained peer facilitators who are here to help students achieve their academic goals during their time here at MiraCosta College. The mission of the Academic Success Coaches is to facilitate student success by offering supportive coaching to assist students in identifying academic goals and aligning them with their own personal interests, objectives and needs.
The Writing Center (WC) is available to help students with brainstorming, drafting, and even the final stages of revision in a writing feedback appointment. Assistance with personal statements for transfer or scholarship, reading strategies, and parts of speech are also available. Students may also drop-in at their convenience to work on writing, reading, or speeches.
Online Academic Support
MiraCosta participates in the Western eTutoring Consortium of colleges and universities to provide free live online and email-based tutoring support for a variety of subjects. Online Tutoring is available in Accounting, Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science (Java & C++ only), Economics, Math (Developmental through Trigonometry), Microsoft Office, Physics, Psychology, Spanish, Statistics, and Web Development (HTML, CSS, and WordPress).
The Writing Center has Online Appointments. Students may submit writing online and a consultant will provide video feedback within 1-3 days.
