When fall semester begins on August 18, MiraCosta College students will have a new certificate option. Optimal Aging and Older Adulthood is a 12-unit, four-course certificate of proficiency that introduces students to the theories and factors related to aging and improved functioning in older adults. While the traditional study of aging looked at the challenges of aging, today's emphasis is on how aging can be optimized.

Professionals in the gerontology field can work for community and human service organizations; retirement communities; federal, state, and local government agencies; educational and research institutions; and related organizations that work either directly or indirectly with aging adults.

A required course for the certificate, GERO 101: Introduction to Aging, is a 3-unit course offered online this fall beginning August 18.

Other courses offered as part of the certificate:
  • PSYC 170, Psychology of Aging: Adult Development and Aging
  • KINE 210,  Exercise Prescriptions for Special Populations
  • NUTR 125 Nutrition and Aging
  • HEAL 101: Principles of Health
  • HEAL 222: Stress Management
  • KINE 204: Techniques and Analysis of Fitness and Weight Training
  • NUTR100: Nutrition Today
