Deon Edwards is a 32-year-old Marine Corps veteran from Chicago, a proud parent, and a full-time student at MiraCosta College. He is majoring in sociology and plans to transfer to CSU–San Marcos. In addition to serving as the student trustee, Deon is the Region X vice chair of the Student Senate of California Community Colleges, a member of the Black Student Union, Performance Writer’s Club, Veteran’s Club, and is a Service Learning student advocate and Umoja associate. He plans to develop a career in counseling in order to become a teacher in Black studies and sociology. He intends to use his college experience to further network with people, serve the student body, affect positive change, and redefine what it is to be a liaison between the student body and the institution.
Deon’s goals as student trustee include:
- Effectively communicating pertinent information to the student body
- Assisting legislatively to help the progression of student success and development
- Achieving a better understanding of diversity throughout the MiraCosta College community through the positive promotion of community-related events
