Ron Ruud was elected to the Board of Trustees of the MiraCosta Community College District in
November 2010. He resides in Rancho Santa Fe, representing Area 2. He lives with his wife, Joyce, and
has four adult children, two of whom teach in California public schools.
Ron earned a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Minnesota and holds a Juris Doctorate, cum laude,
from William Mitchell College of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota. Before retiring in 2009, he practiced law for
over 35 years in Minnesota and California, specializing in education law. Since 1977, he has represented
California school districts and community colleges, advising governing boards on a wide variety of legal
issues and defending districts before administrative agencies and in the courts. He was licensed to
practice in several jurisdictions including the California State Bar, the Minnesota State Bar, and the United
States Supreme Court.
Throughout his career, Ron was active in the educational community, participating in many fundraising
events and various programs. He presented at innumerable workshops and seminars for the Association
of California School Administrators and other professional-management organizations. He served on the
University of California, Riverside, Graduate School of Management Board and taught evening classes at
UCR on labor and public-employment issues. He is co-author of Supervisor's Guide to Discipline and
Documentation, a reference book to assist managers in dealing with employee discipline.
Ron is honored to have the opportunity to serve on the MiraCosta Board of Trustees and pledges his best
efforts to carry on its longstanding tradition for excellence.
