Meet our Students
Jeff Hearn isn’t your typical college student. The 50-something year-old Oceanside resident honed his cyber technology skills while working with a Fortune 500 technology company in San Diego, and he has served with the Air Force in Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Japan, Korea and Turkey.
The San Diego State University student was set on his current course toward becoming a lawyer while studying at MiraCosta College, where he earned his associate’s degree in liberal arts this past May.
“MiraCosta is one of the best schools in the country,” Hearn said. “It’s not called the Harvard of community colleges for nothing. You can get an outstanding education there.”
Hearn, however, never planned to go to MiraCosta. After he lost his high-paying, high-tech job in the private sector due to downsizing, he signed up to be re-activated in the California Air National Guard and was stationed at Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo. He started taking classes at the Community College of the Air Force while in L.A. The rest, as they say, is history.
“It started me on the road to go back to school,” he said.
After leaving the service, Hearn enrolled at Mesa College in San Diego. When Mesa cancelled its summer school offering, Hearn began attending MiraCosta College. There, he earned two associates degrees and was active in the Honors Program.
He also was accepted into the Pre-Law Outreach Program at the University of California, Irvine, which he attended with two other MiraCosta College graduates this past summer. The program introduces prospective law school students to the rigors of becoming a juris doctor, and it includes workshops on resume writing, financial aid, and more.
Hearn hopes to enroll at UC Irvine’s School of Law when he graduates from San Diego State in two years. With his background in cyber technology and his military experience, Hearn is hoping to specialize in cyber law. He remains in contact with many of his mentors at MiraCosta College.
“The people there helped me out so much,” he said, adding that the veterans’ services at the Oceanside Campus are beyond compare. “The students in the Honors Program are so committed, and it has some top-notch professors. I’d highly recommend it to anyone.”
