Ever wonder whose voice is on the other end of the line when you call MiraCosta College? That would be Susan Walker, who’s been the voice of MiraCosta College for more than six years.

Walker began her chapter at MiraCosta College in 1998 when she decided to go back to college.

“My kids were grown, so I decided to go back to school and get a degree,” said Walker.

Walker’s educational plan was to earn an associate degree, transfer to SDSU and then get a “real job.” Then one day, she noticed a job announcement for a temporary job in the Career Center and thought it would be a good idea to work here part-time while taking classes.

While a student, Walker worked in various departments including the Career Center, CalWORKs, AIS, Transfer Center, the Child Development Center, Purchasing, and Research and Development.

“I worked wherever they needed someone to help out. It was awesome because it gave me the chance to learn first-hand what makes MiraCosta such a great place,” said Walker.

As a student, Walker vividly remembers when current sociology professor, Dr. Bruce Hoskins and AIS network specialist, Anthony Ginger, were also MiraCosta students working as tutors in the MiraCosta College Math Learning Center and how they helped her pass her math classes.

“They helped me get through all of my math classes not only with good grades, but also with an understanding of calculations and how statistics work,” said Walker. “I’m sure they are the reason I passed my upper-division stats class at SDSU with a B+!”

Walker graduated from MiraCosta College in 1999 with a degree in business administration and transferred to San Diego State University. In 2001, she received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a minor in American studies.

After graduating from SDSU, Walker continued to work at MiraCosta College. She became a permanent employee in 2009 and has been here 16 years.

Walker’s position at the Public Information Office (PIO) includes being the college “swag” coordinator for college-related events; co-editor of numerous college publications such as newsletters, class schedules and other printed materials produced by PIO; informational material distributor; and more importantly, the main college switchboard operator and greeter.

“I love working at MiraCosta College,” said Walker. “Due to my position, I’m one of the first people students meet and I really like it when I can get students excited about coming to MiraCosta. I like telling them about all the free programs, services, events and money they can receive as a student here—it always makes them smile.”
