Superintendent/President Message Regarding Devastating Wildfires

12/7/2017
Dear MiraCostans,

The last weeks of a semester are always stressful for students and faculty with final projects, papers, and exams looming. This year, unfortunately, our community has also been impacted by devastating wildfires that steadily burn uncontained, damaging property and threatening lives. The unusually dry and windy conditions have made it even more challenging to contain the impacts of these fires in north county San Diego. Many of our students and employees have been evacuated, and some have lost their homes. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by the fires, heavy smoke, and evacuations. Our college stands ready to assist as an evacuation center if the need should arise.

While there is no immediate threat to any of our four campus sites, MiraCosta College closed at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 7 and will remain closed until dangerous fire conditions and air quality improve. We anticipate opening on Monday December 11 for finals week. An assessment will be made Sunday afternoon by college leadership in conjunction with local authorities.

This has been an extremely difficult time for those who have been displaced or are uncertain about their safety. Despite this, many employees have expressed gratitude for all those who have reached out to them and offered support, and encouragement, and even a place to stay. I am also grateful for college leaders in San Diego and Riverside who have reached out to offer support and assistance.

We are immensely grateful for our first responders and volunteers serving to safeguard lives and property!  Fires across many parts of our state this year have challenged our colleges, students, employees, and communities.  Our thoughts are with all of those who have been impacted by fires, smoke, and evacuation and we wish everyone safe outcomes. We will continue to communicate about the situation and hope for a speedy containment and swift and effective recovery efforts.

Thank you for your support,
Sunny Cooke
