NBC 7 and MiraCosta College Announce Live Airing of Debate

NBC 7 / KNSD announces the live airing of “NBC 7 Decision 2018: District 49 Debate” on Tuesday, October 2nd from 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM. Candidates Diane Harkey and Mike Levin will be live in the NBC 7 Studios in Kearney Mesa.

MiraCosta College Associated Student Government is hosting a live viewing of the televised debate. The debate will be moderated by NBC 7 News evening anchors Mark Mullen and Catherine Garcia as well as NBC 7 political reporter Alex Presha. NBC7 will also take questions from the viewing audience at MiraCosta College’s Oceanside campus, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside, Bldg. 3400.

The 49th Congressional District currently covers the northern coastal areas of San Diego County, including the cities Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, and Encinitas, as well as a small portion of southern Orange County. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is in the district. The congressional seat is currently held by Darrell Issa, who will not be running for re-election in 2018.

“No matter what, there will be new leadership in a district held by Darrell Issa since 2001,” said Greg Dawson, NBC 7 Vice President of News. “It has become one of the key swing districts in the country. So there is widespread interest in the outcome of this race, well outside the district.”

“We are honored to collaborate with NBC.com for this critical candidate forum. It’s important students are educated on the candidates and issues since we are part of the largest generation in history and play a major role in the success of our futures. MiraCosta College is excited to be a part of the process through the rollout of the 'Have a Voice, Make a Choice campaign," explains Marc Mendoza, president of MiraCosta College Associated Student Government. In March 2018, MiraCosta College partnered with California's Secretary of State and made a commitment to increase voter engagement, democratic participation, and civic literacy among the student body.
The MiraCosta College viewing and opportunity for audience participation in the NBC 7 live debate is free and open to the public. Signs, paraphernalia and politically-themed attire will not be permitted inside this event. To be a part of the live audience at MiraCosta College, please RSVP to secure your ticket by contacting Kristen Huyck, MiraCosta College Director of Public and Governmental Relations, Marketing and Communications by email or phone at 760-795-6612.
