MiraCosta College will host the 6th annual Barrio Empowerment through Education Conference on November 2, 2018, from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. at 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside, CA 92056.
Barrio Empowerment is a conference for local high school students that connects Latino/a cultural identity, social justice, and higher education opportunities at MiraCosta College. Activities for registered students include educational and motivational workshops, entertainment, and an interactive resource fair.
Events scheduled for the one-day conference include keynote speaker Richard Huizar, a graduate of MIT and MiraCosta College alumni who is currently employed at Apple, along with nine workshops covering a wide range of topics from the dream of college to financial aid.
Students who attended Barrio Empowerment in previous years indicated that they were more interested in attending college in general—and MiraCosta College in particular—as a result of their experiences at the conference. Attendees become comfortable on the college campus, learn about resources that are available to them, and make connections with the students, professionals, and graduates they meet at the event.
The event is fun and inspirational—and full of information about resources available to help students achieve the dream of a college education, no matter what barriers they face. As part of MiraCosta College’s larger objective of increasing access to a college education for students of color, first generation, and low-income students, this event demonstrates that equity is a central value at the college. Further, students learn that their identities and experiences are recognized and valued by the entire college community.
