MiraCosta College Receives Two Grants

MiraCosta College and its partners have been awarded two SB 70 Grants:  The Career Technical Education (CTE) Community Collaborative ($348,000) and the Workforce Innovation Partnership ($218,750). Performance period for the grants is November 1, 2012 through November 30, 2014.

The CTE Community Collaborative is a continuation of five others, the first of which began in June 2008. The Workforce Innovation Partnership is a continuation of three others that began in May 2010. These grants are partnerships are between MiraCosta College, Palomar College, our K-12 districts and industry.

The previous grants have created and strengthened a number of impressive high skill, high wage, high demand programs that transition students from middle school, to high school, to community college and on to the world of work or into the university. At the middle school level the college added career exploration computers and software with a professional development component for teachers. At the high school level they have established career pathways and programs of study in health science and medical technology, arts, media and entertainment, energy and utilities, and public services including articulated courses. Classrooms have been outfitted with technology and equipment, and curriculum has been developed with this funding.

With this additional round of funding new pathways will be added: manufacturing and product development, and building trades and construction. Professional development and opportunities for work-based learning experiences will be offered. Communication between faculty members at both the middle and high schools will be increased. Curriculum, programs of study and articulations will be developed. Equipment and software will be purchased, field trips for students and teachers will take place, and advisory committees consisting of teachers, administrators and industry representatives will meet regularly.
