Alumnus Trevor Garner Wins Top Internship Honor

ciwea scholarship winner Trevor Garner

For the second year running, a MiraCosta student has won the top internship prize from among all the community colleges in the state.  At the 2014 California Internship and Work Experience Association (CIWEA) Annual Conference held last week in Long Beach, Trevor Garner won the Bernard Hyink Scholarship. The association gives out two $1,000 scholarships annually, one for a student from a two-year college and a student from a four-year institution. Applicants write an essay sharing how their academic internship has influenced their career choice. After a review process by several CIWEA members, the winners were announced and the checks and plaques were presented at the conference. Trevor shared in his essay:

This was one of those “ah-ha” moments where I realized the potential of this internship transcended simply doing the books for a local business. Earlier in the semester, I had already jotted down four possible careers in the accounting field: private accountant, tax-preparer, public accountant, and small business owner. But now, I was seeing the potential to work as an accounting and office consultant; I could be hired by small businesses looking to clean up their books, streamline their operations, implement standard operating procedures, and offer the business owners something concrete and tangible to work with. I learned this may not be something many small business owners have in place, but would welcome if it meant their business functioned more smoothly.

Trevor currently is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in accounting at Northwestern State University of Louisiana.  His goal upon completion of his bachelor’s degree is to start an accounting consulting business as described in his essay.  Way to make us proud, Trevor!
