Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a non-remedial approach to learning that supports students toward academic success by integrating “what to learn” with “how to learn.” SI consists of regularly scheduled, out-of-class group study sessions driven by students’ needs. SI sessions are facilitated by “SI Leaders,” students who have already mastered the course material who attend all class lectures, take notes, and act as model students. The SI Leader has been trained to facilitate group sessions wherein students can meet to improve their understanding of course material, review and discuss important concepts, develop study strategies and prepare for exams. The SI leaders utilize collaborative activities to ensure peer-to-peer interaction in small groups.
SI is a free service offered to all students in a targeted course. SI is a non-remedial approach to learning as the program targets high-risks courses rather than high-risks students. All students are encouraged to attend SI sessions, as it is a voluntary program. Students with varying levels of academic preparedness and diverse ethnicities participate. There is no remedial stigma attached to SI since the program targets high-risk courses rather high-risk students.
SI Leader Testimonies
Being an SI Leader was such a rewarding experience! I have built great relationships with students and even made friends that enjoy learning the same things as I do and have the same career goal. I loved seeing students gain confidence in challenging material and reach their academic goals. SI Mentors and Faculty created such a welcoming environment and never failed to be there to help me along my SI journey.Being an SI Leader is the best way to review core material for your career, connect with your peers at MiraCosta, and boost your resume all at once! The semester is full of things to look forward to, and each week is different than the last. The best part is the training sessions when all the SI Leaders get together to learn about learning while having a ton of fun.Questions? Reach Out To
