How do we assess contributions to diversity, equity,
inclusion, and Accessibility?
Knowledge and Understanding
- Knowledge of, experience with, and interest in dimensions of diversity that
result from different identities, such as ethnic, socioeconomics, racial,
gender, sexual orientation, (dis)ability, and cultural differences - Familiarity with demographic data related to diversity in higher education
- Comfort discussing diversity-related issues, especially race
- Understanding of the challenges faced by disproportionately impacted
populations and historically underrepresented* individuals, and the need to
identify and eliminate barriers to their full and equitable participation and
advancement
Teaching/Counseling/Library Reference Services/Credit/Non-Credit
- Strategies to create inclusive and welcoming environments for all
disproportionately impacted and historically underrepresented students - Strategies to encourage both critical thinking and respectful dialogue in the
classroom - Strategies to incorporate and implement equity-minded, culturally
appropriate, and high impact practices - Using new pedagogies and engagement strategies to advance equity,
inclusion, and anti-racism - Ability to collect, assess, and evaluate data (e.g., student learning
outcomes, faculty level course data, service level data), and then
modify/create curriculum, and learning activities in response to awareness
of disproportionate impact - Ability to adapt library reference services and collection development in response to the needs of diverse student populations
Research
- Inclusive and respectful research environments
- Mentoring and supporting the advancement and professional development
of students in disproportionately impacted or historically underrepresented
populations - Research and literary efforts focused on and centering diverse communities
Service/Professional Activities
- Outreach activities designed to remove barriers and to increase the
participation of individuals from historically underrepresented groups - Workshops and activities that help build multicultural competencies and
create inclusive climates - Supporting student organizations that serve historically underrepresented
groups - Participation with professional or scientific associations or meetings that
aim to increase diversity or address the needs of historically
underrepresented students - Serving on university or college committees related to equity and inclusion,
or cultural competency
Leadership
- Evaluating data and policy through a diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-
racist framework - Innovative strategies in budgetary and planning processes that address
equity issues - Focus on anti-racist policy development
*Historically underrepresented student populations in higher education include: Native
American, Black/African American, Latinx/Chicanx/Hispanic, Asian American and
Pacific Islander student populations. Underrepresentation may also vary within
disciplines and career fields.
