Safety and Security Tips
The most common legal problem for international students is breaking drinking laws, such as driving after drinking alcohol, drinking alcohol under the legal age of 21 or giving alcohol to people under the age of 21.
- California's Legalized marijuana laws do not apply to F-1 students who are subject to federal laws.
- International students can violate visa rules for holding, shipping, receiving firearms and ammunition including at a firing range.
- NEVER give personal information about yourself over the phone or to someone you don’t know (phone number, address, bank account information, credit card number).
- If anyone asks you for money, say, “No. I can’t.”
- When you are traveling to new places, listen to local students, staff, and most importantly, your intuition!
- Be firm and direct in declining invitations from people you don’t know. Firmly say “No”, avoid being alone, and say, “I will call the police” to stop unwanted attention.
