Students consistently share similar positive experiences after taking HSE. Common themes among students include community and relationship building, overcoming reading and writing fears, a sense of accomplishment at completion of the course, and a newfound appreciation for writing.
One student noted how HSE provided the right amount of support to ensure success and to grow as a student:
"I have struggled with staying focused and grasping the understanding of what a
teacher was asking when it came to completing writing assignments. This led to me
being frustrated in the past with getting assignments done properly. Another struggle
that I faced was getting the thoughts and ideas in my head, out and onto paper. These
were some of the fears that I had going into taking English 100/52. As I endeavored
to take this class I asked myself am I going to be able to succeed in this class?
However, what helped my fears to be alleviated of not succeeding in English 100 was
adding the support class of English 52. By adding English 52 to my class roster it
helped me become a stronger writer. It did so because I was able to have additional
time with the professor/teacher and other students. This helped me to get clarification
on homework, writing assignments and helped answer any questions that had come up
during English 100. It helped me to understand my assignments clearly and in a way
that I was able to get my assignments done properly."
Another student noted HSE defied her expectations and encouraged her to continue to pursue her interest in writing:
“In this class, I thought we were going to be focusing on grammar and punctuation
but instead, we learned about what it takes to be a good writer. This class has motivated
me to write more because usually I would write 3 pages and I would call it done. The
benefits of learning this information are amazing because now I can share it with
others or use it in other classes I would be attending in the future.”
