Accommodations: Information for Students and Faculty
SAS works collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to coordinate reasonable academic accommodations that support equitable access to courses, instructional activities, and other academic experiences.
Accommodation decisions are made through an individualized, interactive process based on a student's disability-related access needs, educational environment, and available supporting information. Because every student is unique, accommodations may vary from one student to another, even when students have similar disabilities or diagnoses.

decisions are based on each student's unique access needs and supporting documentation.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, appropriate academic adjustments are determined based on a student's disability-related needs and individual circumstances.
Academic adjustments may include auxiliary aids and services, as well as modifications to academic requirements that are necessary to ensure equal educational opportunity. Accommodation eligibility and implementation are determined individually through the SAS interactive process and are based on a student's disability-related access needs and the educational environment.

In providing an academic adjustment, MiraCosta College is not required to lower or fundamentally alter essential course, program, or institutional requirements. All accommodations are authorized on an individual basis.
SAS evaluates accommodation requests through an interactive process that considers the student's disability-related access needs, educational environment, and supporting documentation when applicable. Additional collaboration between SAS, the student and faculty may be necessary when questions arise regarding the implementation of an accommodation in a particular course, program, or activity.
At times, additional documentation or information may be requested to better understand a student's disability-related access needs and to help determine whether a requested accommodation is appropriate and reasonable within the educational setting.
An accommodation that is appropriate for one student may not be appropriate for another. Similarly, a student may require accommodations in one course, service, or activity that are not necessary in another.
The interactive process is designed to identify reasonable accommodations that provide equitable access while maintaining the essential requirements of a course, program, service, or activity.
Questions occasionally arise regarding accommodations that could affect essential course, program, or institutional requirements.
MiraCosta College follows applicable federal and state disability laws and guidance regarding academic adjustments, fundamental alteration, and undue burden.
