The MiraCosta College S.T.O.P. program was established for the purpose of increasing the sense of safety felt by students and other members within our campus community. The program is intended to bridge the gap between the MiraCosta College Police Department and the MiraCosta College campus community. The S.T.O.P. program also attempts to empower the MiraCosta College campus community to work together to mitigate nighttime safety issues.
S.T.O.P. volunteers are responsible for carrying out the primary service of this program: to provide a visible, safety-enhancing presence in the MiraCosta College campus community, and to observe and report any unsafe or suspicious activity to the police department. S.T.O.P volunteers are also responsible for providing safety escort services. Participants are held to the highest ethical, academic, and disciplinary standards.
Although MiraCosta College is a safe campus community, no area is immune from potential criminal activity. The S.T.O.P. program was developed so that students, faculty, and staff might enjoy an enhanced sense of safety during evening hours, and to create a partnership between students and the police department. S.T.O.P. volunteers will not enforce college policy; however, they will receive training in reporting any unsafe or suspicious activity they might observe to the police department. They will not become involved in any potentially dangerous situations and will only observe and report.
If S.T.O.P. volunteers observe what they believe to be unsafe or suspicious activity, they are required to notify the police department by radio, call box, or by calling extension 6911 from a campus telephone.
