Tips to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) effectively and ethically in your job or internship search
- Seek Feedback
ChatGPT and other generative AI tools, while helpful, do not provide the expertise or holistic, individualized approach the Career Center does. After using AI to draft your resume or cover letter, seek feedback from Career Center professionals, mentors, and peers to ensure your materials are polished and professional. We encourage you to make an appointment or drop in to get helpful recommendations and support. - Protect Your Privacy
Exercise caution when sharing personally identifiable information with AI sites/prompts. To preserve your privacy, remove personal details from your resume or cover letter such as name, email, phone number, and address. Avoid using any of your intellectual property (such as software coding, artwork, and prose to name a few) in the AI prompt. - Review and Revise
Be sure to carefully review the content the tool provides. Check for accuracy, bias, and authenticity – make sure all your materials sound like you. - Control Your Data
You can configure your settings so that AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft CoPilot do not save your chat history or use it to train their models. - Company Policies
Check to see if the company you are hoping to work for has a policy on using AI in the application process. Some companies prohibit using it, use AI detection software, and could reject candidates they suspect used AI. - Academic Integrity
If the job search materials you are creating are for a class, be sure to check the syllabus or ask your professor about expectations on the use of AI to complete the assignment. - Supplement, Don't Substitute
Avoid relying solely on AI to generate large amounts of content. Instead, focus on creating high-quality, personalized applications that reflect your unique skills and experiences. - Understand Limitations
Be aware of the limitations of AI tools. They may not always provide contextually accurate or industry-specific advice, so cross-check information with reliable sources. - Stay Updated
AI tools and their capabilities are constantly evolving. Stay informed about the latest developments and best practices to use these tools effectively and ethically.
