Internships & Work Experience Education (WEE)
Internships and WEE are designed to provide MiraCosta students with workplace experience and new or improved skills.

In order to earn academic credit for your internship, you must enroll in a 292 or 299 class. For more information about how to enroll in an internship studies (292) or occupational work experience class (299), please see our webpage Report Your Internship / WEE on JAIN.
Below is a breakdown of the class components and the duties of everyone involved with a 292 or 299 class:
The Student
- Qualifies and finds an internship on JAIN.
- Develops workplace learning objectives with the instructor.
- Meets with the instructor at the internship site twice during the semester. (At the beginning of the internship and at the end of the semester).
- Reports monthly hours on Canvas verifying time worked. For each unit of credit, students must intern a minimum of 54 hours.
- Completes required assignments.
- Adheres to the program requirements as outlined in the Syllabus.
- Submits assignments and monthly hours reports via Canvas. Please contact the ITS Help Desk or the Career Center if you need assistance.
The Employer
- Provides a learning environment and appropriate tasks for the student.
- Offers training and guidance to the student.
- Meets with the student and instructor at the beginning and end of the semester to set goals and to evaluate the student's progress.
- Verifies that required hours have been completed by the student.
- Complies with the expectations outlined in the Employer Letter.
The Instructor
- Serves as the teacher of record and faculty mentor for the enrolled student.
- Develops workplace learning objectives with the student and signs the Learning Agreement along with the student and internship site supervisor.
- Meets with the student and supervisor at the beginning and end of the semester to set goals and to evaluate the student's progress.
- Ensures completion of required Title 5 forms.
- Reviews the student's work, evaluates accomplishment of learning objectives, verifies that required hours have been completed, assigns a grade, and documents SLO's.
- Reviews the Canvas class and meets with Mike Green or Iris Ayala-Swindell for initial training.
Course Credit
Internship Studies and Work Experience Education courses are transferrable to the CSU system. Credit options vary based on the number of hours the student is interning/working and the availability of courses during any given semester. Each unit of credit received requires 54 hours of work at the job or internship site.
