Support for Academic / Progress Notice
In college, “probation” is a temporary academic status assigned to students who did not satisfy their college's minimum academic requirements at the end of the fall or spring semester. At MiraCosta, we refer to this as Academic Notice and Progress Notice. We know that sometimes achieving your goals involves overcoming challenges and obstacles along the way. Please know the Counseling Department is here to support you through online workshops, Express Chat, appointments, and email. Reach out to us with any questions and see below for workshop registration, additional information, and resources.
Counseling
All students on either Academic or Progress Notice are encouraged to make an appointment with a counselor to explore all opportunities to return to "good standing". We’ll discuss important information, support resources, and steps you can take to stay on track and achieve your goals. Please contact us for an appointment with a retention counselor by calling 760.795.6620 or viewing the Counseling department website.
Academic / Progress Notice Information
Students at MiraCosta College can be placed on two different types of Notice: Academic and Progress.
Academic Notice
- A student has attempted a minimum of twelve (12) semester units resulting in a grade point average (GPA) of less than a "C" (2.0).
- Academic Notice will be removed when the student's cumulative GPA is 2.0 or higher.
Progress Notice
- A student has attempted at least twelve (12) semester units and fifty percent (50%) or more of the attempted units resulted in grades of "W" (withdrawal), "I" (incomplete), "NC" (no credit), or "NP" (no pass).
- Progress Notice will be removed when the percentage of units completed is above fifty percent (50%) of the attempted units.
Please Note
- Students placed on notice are informed of their Academic Standing by an Admissions and Records email after each semester. Academic standing is also posted on their permanent record.
- A student on academic or progress notice for two (2) consecutive semesters may be subject to dismissal from the college.
- Notice is based on cumulative coursework and may take several semesters to improve.
- MiraCosta College offers an Excused Withdrawal (EW) grade option for students who were impacted by COVID-19. More information can be found through the Committee on Exceptions (CoE) and/or by meeting with a counselor.
- If you're on Academic or Progress Notice, you could lose eligibility for certain types of financial aid or military affiliated benefits. Contact the Financial Aid Office or Veterans Services for more information.
