The STEM Learning Centers hire tutors and desk assistants as part of our team. If you are interested in working in our centers, read through our Employee Expectations and check out the descriptions below for more information.
Tutor
STEMLC tutors assist students one-on-one and in small group settings with STEM-related course content. Tutors also help and encourage students to develop effective study skills. Tutors are chosen through a selective process based on staffing needs, recommendations, interpersonal skills, experience and an interview with STEMLC faculty and staff.
- science-focused tutors assist with courses in STEM subjects (biology, biotechnology, chemistry, computer science, physics, and physical sciences, as well as astronomy, horticulture, geology, earth science, and oceanography)
- math-focused tutors assist with all math courses (we typically look for students who are able to tutor at the Pre-Calculus level or above), statistics courses (we look for students who are able to tutor BTEC 180, BUS 204, MATH 103, PYSC 104, &/or SOC 125), and Philosophy 110 (logic).
Tutors must meet the following requirements:
- obtain a recommendation from a MiraCosta faculty member in the subject(s) they would like to tutor
- receive a grade of B or better in the course(s) (or higher sequenced course) that they would like to tutor
If you are not a current or recent MiraCosta student and are interested in applying to work as a tutor in our centers, your faculty recommendation can come from a faculty member at your most recent institution.
We accept applications at any time, however our typical hiring periods are in May for the upcoming fall semester and in December for the upcoming spring semester. Additional information and directions for submitting a STEMLC Tutor Application are on the application available below.
If you are interested in applying for a tutoring position in non-STEM subjects, visit MiraCosta's Academic Support & Tutoring for additional services.
