Who we are
We are The Learning Centers (TLC), a connected set of welcoming learning spaces where students can ask questions, explore ideas, and build confidence in their abilities. We support students across disciplines through tutoring, supplemental instruction, writing feedback, and a range of academic services designed to meet them where they are.
We believe that all MiraCosta College students belong here, whether they are just getting started, returning after time away, or pushing toward advanced goals. TLC is a place where questions, ideas, languages, and experiences are valued.
TLC’s Purpose
Our Learning Coaches and peer tutors work with students to develop the skills, strategies and processes, and confidence needed to reach their academic and professional goals.
Instead of quick fixes, we focus on learning that lasts. We help students build habits and ways of thinking that carry into future courses, careers, and life beyond college.
What Students Can Expect
When you visit TLC, you can expect a supportive and engaging learning experience. We provide:
- access to an engaging environment with tutoring, supplemental instruction, writing feedback, and academic support services
- guidance that focuses on understanding, not just completing tasks
- tools, strategies, and resources to continue learning beyond the session
- encouragement, patience, and respect
Our goal is for you to leave each visit with clearer understanding, next steps, and increased confidence.
What We Encourage from Students
To get the most out of TLC, we encourage you to:
- be ready to engage and participate
- come prepared with your assignments, questions, and goals
- be open to feedback and trying new methods
Your ideas, voice, and decisions matter. Active participation leads to deeper learning.
Our Approach to Learning
Learning at TLC is collaborative, student-centered, and grounded in partnership. We will:
- ask questions that strengthen your conceptual understanding
- explore strategies together to build your confidence
- encourage you to make decisions about your work and find your voice
- help you approach challenges through a growth mindset, viewing them as opportunities for development
During our sessions, we do not grade, judge, or impose answers. We create space for you to take risks, try new approaches, and learn from the process.
A central goal of TLC is to help students become independent learners able to navigate
challenges, use resources effectively, and make informed decisions. TLC promotes resourceful
learning by connecting students with strategies, processes, and tools that extend
beyond individual sessions.
You learn best when you are actively involved. TLC emphasizes collaboration between
students and peer tutors, fostering partnerships in which knowledge is explored, constructed,
and applied. Rather than delivering answers, we guide students through inquiry-based
interactions that promote critical thinking, reflection, and lasting learning habits.
TLC is committed to reflecting on these practices, reviewing student feedback, and
providing ongoing training opportunities to remain responsive to student needs.
The philosophy of TLC reflects a commitment to equitable, collaborative, and ethical
learning practices. Through this work, TLC contributes to the development of strong,
capable learners prepared for continued success.
