The history of equity work at MiraCosta College is rooted in student advocacy. Long before the college had the language or data to name educational inequities, students were advocating for greater representation and support. From the creation of the Student Center in the late 1980s to advocacy by organiations such as M.E.Ch.A, BSU, and GSA, students have consistently pushed the college to better reflect and serve its diverse communities.
In 2014, the college built on this legacy by establishing the Department of Student Equity in response to the state's renewed emphasis on comprehensive Student Equity Plans. The department brought together existing programs and emerging stratgies to address equity gaps through coordinated, data-informed work. In 2016, continued student advocacy helped lead to the creation of the Social Justice and Equtiy Center.
Today, the Equity Centers represent the next evolution of this work. They bring together culturally responsive support, community, academic success, and leadership in spaces intentionally designed around the experiences and strengths of our students. What began with student advocacy, grew through intentional programs, and developed into a coordinated department now continues through a network of Equity Centers.
